The Triangle Aphasia Project started much like any “grassroots” project… with an idea, several committed, passionate individuals, and a realization that it might be an uphill battle. Seems simple enough, right? Help individuals with aphasia and their families deal with the impact of aphasia with training, support, and ongoing therapy options. But conventional thought in a medical model suggested that there was this window of opportunity for therapy and, ultimately, for the amount of progress that an individual with aphasia could make. Six months to a year… a sentence that led to social isolation, depression and only limited return to social, vocational or recreational activities. The stigma of aphasia was a self-fulfilling prophecy that we had to change, one person at a time.
The initial Board of Directors met in the Silverman living room with three young boys running through the house and one “on the way”. Two Speech Pathologists, a Physician’s Assistant, a retired Communications Professor with Aphasia, his spouse, a social worker, and a Case Manager… a rather unintimidating group with a clear vision but no experience in bringing a nonprofit to life. So we worked, and boy did we work! Courses in nonprofit management, fundraising, and marketing followed, and a valiant effort to complete the 501 c 3 application, which was approved on the first try! We were so proud. And our group, yes…one group… grew, and we decided it was time to add a group, or two.
TAP grew annually in client numbers, donor support, and programs that were offered to clients, their families, and the community! Seven years later, we find ourselves with over 200 clients, 400+ individual donors, and a handful of generous corporate supporters. Adopted by WakeMed Health and Hospitals in July 2007, TAP at WakeMed Rehab is proud to continue to serve the entire Triangle and beyond with wonderful relationships with the rehabilitation community.
